Track Presets
Track Presets is a MaxForLive device that lets you create and load Audio or MIDI track presets in Ableton Live.
- You can assign a keyboard or MIDI shortcut to each individual preset, to instantly create the track in your Live set.
- Alternatively, you can use a single shortcut to open a Pop-up window next to your mouse, to select the preset that way.
- The Pop-Up window can also be set as an “Always-On” window, making it perfect for touchscreen use.
Each preset allows you to customize new tracks with the following settings:
- Track Type (Audio or MIDI), Name, Color, Input Routing, and Monitoring State, Mute, Solo, Arm, Volume, and Pan
- Effect/Instrument Rack Preset: Choose a pre-saved effect/Instrument rack (.adg) from Live’s browser to load automatically into the track. (These can of course contain both Ableton Effect devices, instruments, or plugins, just like all your effect/instrument racks.)
The device supports up to 8 track presets per instance, and you can use as many instances of the device as you want.—for example, one for Audio track presets and another for Virtual Instruments.

Load Instruments or FX racks into the new track
Choose a pre-saved effect/Instrument rack (.adg) from Live’s browser to load automatically into the track.
(These can of course contain both Ableton Effect devices, instruments, or plugins, just like all your effect/instrument
racks.)

MIDI/Keyboard Shortcut and Push
Assign a keyboard or MIDI shortcut to each individual preset, to load them into your Live Set.
Or trigger them from push.

Pop-up Window
You can also assign a keyboard shortcut to a Pop-up window that opens next to your mouse like a menu.

TouchScreen use
You can customize this pop-up window to stay opened all the time, to use it on an external Touch screen monitor.
- Place the devices in your Ableton Live User Library.
- Default User Library locations:
- Windows: \USERS\[USERNAME]\DOCUMENTS\ABLETON\USER LIBRARY
- Mac: MACINTOSH HD/USERS/[USERNAME]/MUSIC/ABLETON/USER LIBRARY
- Live needs to analyze your User Library after adding devices. This process may take some time. In the meantime, you can drag and drop the devices from your User Library onto your tracks.
- After Live found them you'll be able to access them from Live's Browser.
- Drag and drop the device onto your Master/Main track or any other track of your choice.
- Before using Track Presets, the device needs to collect your I/O settings to function properly.
- Click the Gear icon to open the Setup Menu. A message will appear prompting you to gather I/O information.
- Click the “Gather Inputs” button to proceed.
(This setup is only required the first time you use the device. Once completed, you can save the device in your template Live Set, or as a preset in Live’s browser for future use.)
You have two options for gathering input sources:
1. Clean Snapshot: Captures only primary inputs (External Inputs, Master, Resampling).
2. Include All Tracks: If you disable “Exclude Tracks,” the device will capture all currently available tracks as input sources.
After gathering I/O information, you can start creating and using Track Presets
Important: I recommend collecting the I/O information in a relatevely empty Live Set where you don’t have a lot of tracks.
If you need to use the device in an existing project where you already have a lot of stuff, first gather the I/O settings in your template set, then save the device as a preset, and import it into your project where you want to use it.
Important: If you make any changes to your I/O settings in Ableton Live (such as switching your audio interface), you’ll need to re-run the input gathering process. Otherwise, Track Presets may assign unexpected inputs to new tracks.
After completing the initial setup, click the Gear icon to customize your track presets:

Most of the options are pretty self explanatory:
You can set the Name, Type (Audio/MIDI), FX Chain, Color, Input Source, Monitoring, Solo, Arm, Volume, Pan of the track preset. And you can choose where to load the new track: Before, or after the currently selected track, or at the end of your Live set.
Selecting a Color: For selecting a color you need to click on the colored area under the preset’s name, and it’ll reveal a color picker:

Selecting an FX Chain: If you want Track Presets to load an FX Chain / Rack into the newly created track, you can simply drag&drop a .adg file from Live’s browser into the box.

Once you’ve set up your track presets you can choose between multiple ways on how to load these presets into your Live set:
STRAIGHTFORWARD WAYS:
- You can simply press on a preset’s name on the device, to load it.
- You can assign a Keyboard/MIDI shortcut to all individual presets.

- You can load these presets using Push.

POP-UP WINDOW:

You can assign a keyboard or MIDI shortcut to the Pop-Up button, allowing you to quickly open a preset selection window next to your mouse. This window displays the same list of presets as the device itself.
Default Behavior:
- The Pop-up window works like a menu, meaning it automatically closes after selecting a preset.
Customization Options:
- Scaling/Size: Adjust the size of the Pop-up window to fit your needs.

Click the Gear icon to access additional settings:

- Auto Close: Disable this option if you want the Pop-up to stay open after selecting a preset.
- Open at Mouse: When disabled, the window will always open in the last used position instead of following the mouse.
- Set a custom name for the Pop-up window if you’re using multiple instances of the Track Presets device.
Example alternative Use Case:
If you disable both Auto Close and Open at Mouse, and resize the Pop-up window, you can set it up for use on an external touchscreen monitor for quick and permanent access.
